Michael Garvey BI'94
Alumnus, Former FBI Forensic Molecular Biologist, and current U.S. Government Branch Chief and Senior Expert.
A Philadelphia native, Garvey moved to Washington, D.C. following his graduation to pursue a MS in Forensic Science, concentrating in Serology and Molecular Biology. As the Chief Forensic Investigator for the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Garvey improved the analytical capabilities of the office, and investigated several high profile cases while managing one of the highest homicide rates in the country. Garvey left the D.C. Medical Examiner's office to pursue a position with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He shortly was promoted to the position of Supervisory Forensic Biologist (DNA Examiner) with the FBI DNA Analysis Unit, where he actively continued his mission to improve the investigative and analytical capabilities of the District of Columbia. In addition to his federal cases, Garvey created and managed a team dedicated to processing cases and providing training for the District of Columbia. Garvey has served on numerous national committees, audited crime laboratories throughout the country, been invited as a guest lecturer at numerous colleges/universities, and provided expert testimony and both national and international trials. In late 2003, Garvey took a new assignment with the U.S. Government and continues his service as a Branch Chief and Senior Expert. While government service has kept Garvey busy, he continues to pursue his educational and academic interests through a PhD program in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology at George Mason University, and a few adjunct faculty positions. In 2007, Garvey accepted an adjunct position at USP and looks forward to “coming home.”
